Why We Sponsored RPAS in Australian Skies 2026 – Reflections from the Gala Dinner in Canberra

Last month our team headed to Canberra for RPAS in Australian Skies 2026 (10–12 March at Hotel Realm), and we were proud to sponsor the event.

On Wednesday 11 March I had the chance to speak at the AAUS Gala Dinner. I kept it short — I’m not here to drone on — but I wanted to share exactly who Mirrormapper is and why we exist.

So, who is Mirrormapper? We’re a Melbourne-based company working at the intersection of drones, data, and software. Our focus is simple: automating data capture and accelerating the decisions that come from it.

For years I was pretty good at moving drone boxes around warehouses. But what I genuinely enjoyed was helping people who had just bought their first Mavic 3 Enterprise actually get it working. If someone gave even the slightest hint they wanted to learn more, I took that and ran with it. Over the years I’ve taught thousands of operators how to set up RTK, plan missions, and troubleshoot the little problems that always show up. (Some of you probably still have ntip.data.gnss.ga.gov.au burned into your reflexes.)

The real challenge hasn’t changed As more businesses started bringing drones into their operations, the experience became incredibly consistent. The same stumbling blocks. The same knowledge gaps. The same frustration.

Drone hardware today is the best it has ever been. But better hardware alone doesn’t solve the real problem.

The real challenge is turning data into meaningful action — action based on accurate, recent information. Businesses rarely struggle because drones are complicated. They struggle because integrating that data into real workflows is.

That’s the challenge we’ve set ourselves at Mirrormapper: taking aerial data and implementing it in ways that actually matter.

Real outcomes we’ve delivered Over the past year, working with great partners, we’ve built systems that:

  • Automate volume reporting so stakeholders get clear insights almost immediately after a flight.
  • Replace long email chains and manual coordination with simple button presses that maintain service level agreements for remote drone operations.
  • And most recently, we completed a three-month data capture program for cotton variety trials alongside the AgDrone team.

In that trial we processed heat maps to analyse insect pressure and growth rates. It saved agronomists time in the field and gave early insight into disease spread. We used the AgDock — essentially a DJI Dock, Starlink, and Icom mounted to a galvanised trailer. It’s not flashy. But it’s honest, practical, and cost-effective for the work that needed to be done.

Looking ahead The opportunities for uncrewed systems in Australia are enormous — automation, AI-driven insights, advanced sensors, and new regulatory frameworks. In many ways, we’re still right at the beginning of what this technology can deliver.

That’s where we focus our time: building systems that move information from the sky to the people who need it, quickly and reliably. Because the real value of this technology isn’t the drone. It’s the decision someone can make because the right data arrived at the right time.

Thank you A massive thank you to AAUS for another outstanding event, to everyone who came up for a chat during the conference or at the Gala Dinner, and to the whole Mirrormapper crew who made the trip happen.

If you were at RPAS and we didn’t get to catch up — or you’re now thinking about how to turn your drone program into something that actually drives decisions — we’d love to have a conversation.

We’re based in Melbourne with local stock, certified training, repairs, and end-to-end data delivery.
