Which handheld scanner do I need?

Pick from the job, not from the channel count on the brochure.

viDoc Light. Phone RTK for control points, detail pickup and light as-builts when you do not need a full SLAM walk.

SHARE C1. Relative models for interiors, stairwells and GPS-denied spaces when you already trust your ground control.

SHARE C1 Pro. Mixed indoor and outdoor jobs that need AUSCORS NTRIP so the cloud sits on real-world coordinates from one walk.

SHARE C10. Long traverses, plant, pits and complex geometry where lighter handhelds drift. C10-16 to enter. C10-32 when density matters. C10-32 Pro when range does.

How handheld scanning works

What the walk gives you, and what it does not.

What a handheld LiDAR scanner is

A handheld LiDAR scanner is a walk-through 3D capture tool you carry on site. It builds a colourised point cloud as you move, so interiors, stairwells, tunnels and under-canopy spaces become measurable geometry without a drone or a room full of tripods.

Phone RTK units such as viDoc Light sit in the same family when you need centimetre points and geo-tagged photos rather than a continuous SLAM cloud.

You leave with measured data for review, CAD underlay and handover. You do not leave with a finished drawing set or BIM model.

What you actually walk out with

You walk the site. The scanner builds a colourised point cloud as you go. That cloud is for review, measure and as an underlay in CAD. It is not a finished drawing set and it is not a BIM model.

Miss a wing and it stays missing. Check coverage on site. Rescan before you leave.

Relative vs absolute

Relative accuracy asks whether the cloud holds together. Absolute accuracy asks whether it sits on a real-world datum.

Outdoors, SHARE C1 Pro, C10 and viDoc Light can take AUSCORS NTRIP. Indoors you still bridge with SLAM or control. Brochure centimetre claims are not interchangeable across vendors or jobs.

When the drone is still the right tool

Open yards, roofs and big outdoor surfaces are usually faster from the air. Handheld wins under canopy, indoors, in tunnels and anywhere a tripod circus slows you down.

Most programmes that care about the whole site use both and register the clouds in one project.

Most programmes that care about the whole site use more than one method and register the clouds in one project. Handheld is not a drone replacement outdoors in open sky.

After the walk

Capture runs the job on site. PointClouds Studio is where you process and check the cloud. MapShare is how you send a client a link instead of a ZIP.

Most jobs leave as LAS, LAZ, E57 or PLY for CAD. 3D Gaussian Splatting is optional, needs NVIDIA CUDA, and is for showing a space, not for delivering a whole site as engineering data.

Accuracy

Why accuracy numbers do not compare cleanly

People mash three numbers together: relative cloud accuracy, absolute coordinate accuracy, and point density. They answer different questions.

On a clean SHARE walk, relative geometry is usually within a few centimetres. Absolute hold depends on RTK fix quality, control and how long the traverse runs. More channels show more fine structure. They do not make a bad path honest.

Glass, mirrors, water, shiny metal and blank corridors are hard for every handheld SLAM system. Path planning beats the marketing range figure.

Buy local

Why buy from Australia, not a grey import

You will see different prices for the same scanner online. One is usually a grey import. The other is Australian stock with a GST invoice, ACL warranty, and a Melbourne team that commissions the kit.

Grey import means no local warranty desk, no handover on your site, and no one who owns the NTRIP or software seat after the box arrives. The list price looks lower until the first fault or the first firmware block.

We stock SHARE and viDoc in Melbourne. Setup, training and repairs stay with the same people who sold you the kit. Ask for the landed kit price if you are comparing quotes.

Choosing

How do I pick between viDoc, C1, C1 Pro and C10?
Start with what you have to hand over. viDoc Light if you need centimetre points from a phone and you are not walking a full SLAM cloud. SHARE C1 for interiors and GPS-denied work when you already handle control. SHARE C1 Pro when the same walk goes indoor and outdoor and needs AUSCORS NTRIP. C10 when the site is long, plant-heavy or complex enough that lighter units drift. The compare table on this page is the short version.
When is viDoc Light enough?
Control points, detail pickup, geo-tagged photos, light as-builts. If you need continuous colourised geometry of rooms or plant, step up to SHARE C1 or SHARE C1 Pro.
C1 or C1 Pro for renovation work?
SHARE C1 if most of the job is indoors or covered and you are fine placing control. SHARE C1 Pro if outdoor legs need the cloud on real-world coordinates without a second setup. We downsell when C1 is enough.
When do we need C10 instead of C1 Pro?
Long traverses, large plant, multi-storey mixes, pits and sites where C1-class units start to bend. C10-16 gets you into the range. C10-32 when density matters. C10-32 Pro when you need the longer range. Bring the brief if the call is close.

Buying

Do I need a CASA licence to use one?
No. Handheld LiDAR and phone RTK are not aircraft. You do not need a CASA remote pilot licence for these scanners. That is different from our drone range, where CASA rules apply to the aircraft and the operation.
What does a handheld LiDAR scanner cost in Australia?
On this page, viDoc Light starts around six and a half thousand dollars AUD. SHARE C1 and SHARE C1 Pro sit in the mid to high thousands. SHARE C10 systems run from the low teens into the thirties depending on channels and range. Prices shown are from Melbourne stock and can move with kit options. Ask for a quote if you need a full kit price with training.
Can I hire or trial one before buying?
Yes. We offer hire and rent-to-try on selected kits so you can prove the workflow on a real site before you commit. Leasing is available on larger systems. Book a demo or ask for current hire availability.
How much can I cover in a day?
It depends on the site, not the brochure. A clean interior floor plate can be a few thousand square metres in a day on SHARE C1 or C1 Pro if you plan loops and check coverage as you go. Plant, multi-level cores and feature-poor corridors slow you down. C10 helps on long traverses. We size the day against your deliverable on the demo.

Accuracy

What do the accuracy numbers actually mean?
Relative accuracy is how well the cloud holds together. Absolute accuracy is how well it sits on a datum. RTK helps outdoors with AUSCORS NTRIP. Indoors you still bridge with SLAM or control. Density is a separate question. Do not mix the three in a tender sentence.
Will glass, mirrors and shiny metal scan cleanly?
Often poorly. Same story for thin cables and feature-poor corridors. Plan the path, add loops, verify the hard bits by hand. No handheld SLAM magics that away.

Workflow

Is the point cloud a finished CAD or BIM model?
No. It is measured data you review, measure and model against. Draft tools help. Final drawings still need a human against your standards.
What software do we use day to day?
Capture on site. PointClouds Studio to process and check. MapShare when you want to send a client a link instead of a ZIP. Most deliveries leave as LAS, LAZ, E57 or PLY. 3D Gaussian Splatting is optional and needs NVIDIA CUDA.
