Why build custom AI models?
The Matrice series already has strong built-in detection (people, vehicles, boats, etc.), but real-world Australian use cases often need something more specific:
- Detecting power poles or missing insulators on transmission lines
- Counting livestock or identifying specific crop issues from the air
- Spotting hard hats and PPE on construction sites
- Detecting invasive species, erosion, or safety hazards in remote areas
Onboard processing means the model runs directly on the drone — no internet required and real-time results.
How we do it (and how you can too)
In the video I walk through the full process using the DJI Developer Platform and a Google Colab notebook we’ve prepared:
- Sign up at the DJI Developer Platform → “Algorithms on Aircraft”
- Grab the model source code (based on YOLO for fast, efficient detection)
- Train your model using your own dataset (we recommend RoboFlow Universe for high-quality aerial datasets)
- Use our Colab notebook to handle the training with the DJI-specific patches
- Export the model and upload it to the DJI platform
- Deploy it to your specific Matrice serial numbers
