Auto-Generated Surveying Operation Report

Upon completion of an operation, DJI Pilot 2 can automatically generate a survey quality report. This report provides comprehensive access to key information such as photo points, RTK status, and photo parameters. If there are any anomalies, additional photos can be taken on-site to avoid repeated trips.

Accessory Upgrades, Performance Leap

The DJI AL1 SpotLight can illuminate subjects up to 100 meters away, and features two modes, Always-On and Strobe. It can connect with the gimbal, enabling it to follow the camera's movements to ensure the illuminated area aligns with the camera's view. Additionally, the spotlights can focus on a single object or offer a wide field of view (FOV) which illuminates up larger areas.

Fusion Positioning, Safe Return-to-Home

The Matrice 4 series comes with an integrated DJI RTK module which supports the extended L5 frequency band and features GNSS+Vision Fusion Positioning and Navigation System. It allows for the return-to-home point to be updated through visual positioning, allowing for rapid takeoff within 15 seconds. Even without GNSS signals, it can complete the return-to-home process, effectively overcoming signal obstructions and interference commonly found in urban environments.

Is the Matrice 4E the right aircraft for our mapping work?
Yes, when your billable output is orthos, DSMs, progress models or oblique facades — not thermal inspection. The M4E is DJI's mapping variant: 4/3-inch 20 MP wide camera with mechanical shutter, DNG RAW, 0.5 s photo interval and Distortion Correction 2.0 for photogrammetry. If the job needs radiometric thermal or night search, that's the M4T. If you need unattended Dock 3 missions, look at the M4D instead.
We're on a Matrice 3E — is the M4E a worthwhile upgrade?
Upgrade when you want mechanical-shutter mapping on a 4/3 sensor, around 49 minutes endurance, integrated RTK on the airframe and O4 Enterprise transmission. The M4E adds 3-directional ortho and 5-directional oblique capture, laser rangefinder to 1800 m and factory calibration wired into Terra. If your M3E still wins the jobs you quote at the spec you deliver, keep flying it — we route honestly either way.
M4E or Matrice 400 with Zenmuse L3 — which fits our tender?
Match the deliverable spec. M400 plus L3 wins when the tender demands corridor LiDAR RMSE, vegetation penetration or sub-5 cm vertical accuracy at altitude. The M4E wins on cost per hectare for orthos and medium-area photogrammetry on sites the compact platform covers. The 200 g payload limit also rules out heavy Zenmuse payloads. Performance & workflow

Do we still need ground control points with RTK on the M4E?
Not for routine georeferencing when you have an RTK fixed solution via AUSCORS NTRIP — we configure that at handover. For tenders with a stated accuracy spec, independent check shots remain standard QA. In GNSS-challenged segments or when the client demands network adjustment, D-RTK 3 or targeted GCPs supplement the RTK workflow. That's verification, not a workaround for missing RTK.
NTRIP, D-RTK 3 base station or PPK — which RTK path suits the M4E?
AUSCORS NTRIP is the default for routine jobs with reliable mobile coverage — no base station on site. D-RTK 3 suits remote corridors and sites where you want corrections independent of the cellular network. PPK works when you log base data and post-process in Terra or your photogrammetry stack. We configure the path that matches your typical sites during handover, not every option at once.
How much ground can we cover in one M4E flight?
Up to around 49 minutes on standard propellers at sea level with no wind — enough for a solid progress ortho or multi-directional oblique block on a medium site. Mapping productivity improves with 3-directional ortho and 5-directional oblique capture versus single-pass flying. Real coverage depends on wind, altitude, overlap settings and battery reserve policy — we model that against your typical sites during handover.
Do we need DJI Terra, or can we process M4E data in Pix4D or Metashape?
DJI Terra is the standard path and integrates directly with factory calibration and RTK tags from Pilot 2. The M4E also works in Pix4D, Metashape, DroneDeploy and similar platforms that read embedded geotags and DNG RAW. Landmapper accelerates mapping deliverables — orthos, contours, volumes — with less manual cleanup when that's your weekly output. We recommend what fits your invoiced deliverables, not an upsell stack you won't use.
What Pilot 2 settings matter for survey-grade M4E captures?
Use the mechanical shutter on the wide camera, lock ISO in the 100–400 range and keep shutter speeds at 1/1000 s or faster for sharp imagery at mapping speed. Disable dewarping in Pilot 2 for photogrammetry — Distortion Correction 2.0 handles lens correction in the processing pipeline. We load sample mission templates with these settings during handover so your first paid job isn't a settings experiment.
Can we merge M4E aerial captures with interior handheld scans?
Yes. RTK-georeferenced M4E orthos and obliques register with S20 or S100 handheld SLAM in the same coordinate frame — fly the overview, walk the plant room the same week, one model. We wire this cross-platform workflow during handover when you run both on the same contract.

Compliance

Do we need special CASA approvals to operate an M4E commercially?
Standard visual line of sight operations fall under your existing ReOC and RePL framework with a site-specific risk assessment — we provide CASA-aware deployment guidance, not CASA approval. If you're planning beyond visual line of sight or recurring automated missions, build the operational approval pathway before hardware lands. CASA grants authorisations; we help you scope the case.

What warranty and support do I get on an M4E?
A 12-month warranty backed by Australian Consumer Law, with support from our Melbourne team — phone, email, and the same engineers who configured your aircraft and did your handover. Training is bundled in Melbourne; other major Australian cities are available for an additional fee. DJI Care Enterprise extends accidental cover when you want it.
