When does the Matrice 4TD make sense over the M4T?
Choose the 4TD when recurring unattended thermal and visual inspection routes are the requirement — not when you need a foldable aircraft in the ute for rapid manual deploy. The 4TD is Dock 3-native: IP55 airframe, extended endurance, radiometric thermal, NIR auxiliary light and six low-light fisheye sensors. If autonomy is not the job, the manual M4T is the better buy. If the dock is the job, start with 4TD.
Do we have to buy the Dock 3 with the M4TD?
The 4TD is optimised for Dock 3 autonomous workflows — recurring thermal routes, remote launch and unattended charging. You can fly it manually with RC Plus 2 Enterprise, but if autonomy is not the requirement, M4T may be the better buy. When unattended thermal ops are the job, we quote the dock, aircraft, FlightHub 2 and site connectivity as one configured system. See our Dock 3 FAQ for the full autonomy pathway.
4TD or M4T for solar, electrical and infrastructure thermal programmes?
M4T wins when a pilot deploys to varied sites on demand — one aircraft, many locations. The 4TD wins when the asset stays put and you want scheduled thermal plus visual passes without truck rolls — substations, solar farms, water treatment, perimeter security. Match the ops model first, then the sensor. Both export radiometric R-JPEG; the difference is how the mission runs.
What's included when Mirrormapper deploys an M4TD system versus buying the aircraft elsewhere?

Do I need my thermal reporting workflow figured out before I scope a 4TD dock?
No. Tell us the asset class and how often you need fresh thermal data — daily perimeter, weekly solar, monthly switchgear. We'll map the capture, conversion and reporting path in the conversation. Most buyers know the inspection programme, not the finished emissivity and export spec. We process sample R-JPEG from a representative route so you can judge the workflow before you commit.

Performance & workflow

Is the 4TD thermal camera radiometric like the M4T?
Yes — the 4TD carries the same class of 640 × 512 uncooled thermal sensor with R-JPEG export and super-resolution to 1280 × 1024. Radiometric data is embedded in DJI's proprietary format and needs DIRP-compatible software or a proper conversion step for third-party analysis. We wire the reporting path during handover, including Thermalmapper when you run recurring automated inspection programmes.
Do we need Thermalmapper for automated 4TD programmes, or is DJI enough?
DJI Thermal Analysis Tool 3 handles spot and area measurements from R-JPEG files for ad-hoc analysis. Thermalmapper fits recurring dock programmes where you want faster report generation, trend tracking across scheduled flights and less manual cleanup at scale. Custom AI Models layer automated anomaly detection on live or uploaded feeds when you need alerts, not just images. We recommend what fits your invoiced deliverables.
Can the 4TD run thermal and visual inspection routes overnight?
Yes — that's a primary use case for the 4TD over the 4D. The NIR auxiliary light supports low-light zoom alongside thermal, and the six low-light fisheye sensors improve positioning for autonomous night routes. Scheduled missions in FlightHub 2 can run around the clock when weather and your CASA authorisation allow. Ground hazards and airspace still need to be managed in your operational safety case.
How do emissivity settings work on recurring 4TD dock missions?
Set material-appropriate emissivity in Pilot 2 mission templates before routes go live — default 1.0 is rarely correct for solar panels, coatings or painted steel. Consistent standoff distance on repeat routes improves comparability flight to flight. We load template parameters for your asset types during commissioning and document the reporting assumptions your client sees.
How do we plan and run 4TD missions when no one's on site?
Through DJI FlightHub 2. You schedule recurring thermal and visual routes or launch on demand, watch the live stream, and manage captured data from anywhere with a connection — the drone flies, returns, charges and uploads on its own. We configure FlightHub 2 to your routes, alert thresholds and data handoff during commissioning.
What weather can the 4TD handle in autonomous operation?
The 4TD airframe is IP55-rated — light rain and dust that ground most manual operations. The Dock 3 is IP56-rated with a wider temperature range for the hangar itself. Sustained high wind, heavy precipitation or icing will suspend automated flights — the dock holds the aircraft safe until conditions clear. Thermal measurement accuracy also degrades in heavy rain and fog.
What does our site need to host an M4TD with Dock 3?
Four things: a stable mounting surface, mains power, reliable internet for FlightHub 2 — cellular, Starlink or fibre — and clear launch and recovery airspace overhead. Hilly or built-up sites may need a D-RTK 3 Relay for signal extension. We run a site survey first to confirm power, connectivity and coverage before anything is bolted down.

Compliance

Do we need CASA approval to run automated 4TD dock missions?
Yes — the dock does not remove regulatory requirements. Remote and automated operations, and especially beyond visual line of sight, require the right CASA approvals: ReOC, RePL and an operational approval for how you intend to fly. Night thermal programmes may add operational considerations to your safety case. CASA grants authorisations; we help you scope the pathway.
Does the dock give us detect-and-avoid for BVLOS thermal flights?
No, and it's important to be precise. Onboard sensing and ADS-B provide traffic awareness data to support your safety case — not an automated detect-and-avoid system. Separation in beyond visual line of sight operations is managed through your approved concept of operations: segregated airspace, observers, procedures and that awareness data. We help you assemble those elements; the hardware does not replace them.

What warranty and support do I get on an M4TD deployment?
A 12-month warranty backed by Australian Consumer Law, with support from our Melbourne team — phone, email, and the same engineers who commissioned your system. DJI Care Enterprise and DJI Enterprise Maintenance extend cover when you want them. Because dock systems run unattended, we'd rather diagnose a fault remotely with you than have you wait on an overseas repair queue.
