The spreadsheet that beats Matrice 400 on paper usually has a bigger lift number and a sensor DJI does not sell on a Zenmuse mount. That can be the right aircraft. It is also how a capture program splits in two: one the crew already knows, and one that only flies when the specialist is on site.
M400's published ceiling is 6 kg at the third gimbal connector, at sea level. Capacity falls with altitude. If the instrument is inside that envelope and talks DJI's ports, we spec M400. If it is not, you are leaving the ecosystem on purpose. Say that out loud before you buy the frame.
Six kilograms is a hard stop
L3, P1, H30 Series, S1 and V1 are the hangs we quote on M400. They fly in Pilot 2, process in Terra where that engine applies, and sit under DJI Care Enterprise when you take the cover. Custom frames advertise more mass, odd research instruments and "we will mount anything". Those claims can be true. They are also a different spare-parts story, a different firmware story and a different conversation with the insurer.
M400 will not carry a 12 kg scanner. A custom lift quote is a different program. The extra kilograms arrive with work you now own.
What you inherit outside Pilot 2
A non-DJI lift airframe usually means a second set of standing orders, a maintenance regime the OEM wrote for a short production run, and pilots who cannot step across from the Matrice they already fly. Data often leaves the aircraft in a format Terra will not open, so the office runs a second pipeline. Training does not transfer. When the person who integrated the gimbal is on leave, the aircraft waits.
M400 is constrained, and that is the point for a crew that has to fly next Tuesday. RC Plus 2, O4 Enterprise, FlightHub 2 for the people who already live there, Australian warranty through the same engineers who balanced the payload. Repeatability across a roster is the product, not peak lift on a calm test day.
Insurance and CASA paperwork still scale with mass and with how unusual the aircraft is. DJI Matrice-class is a known object in those files. A one-off frame is a longer letter. Budget the calendar, not only the airframe.
| Matrice 400 | Custom / specialist lift | |
|---|---|---|
| Payload ceiling (typical) | 6 kg at third gimbal, sea level (DJI) | Often higher; confirm the sheet |
| Flight app and fleet software | Pilot 2, FlightHub 2 | Usually separate |
| Mapping / LiDAR processing | Terra for DJI payloads | Often a third-party chain |
| Crew swap | Same Matrice type rating path | Specialist-dependent |
| Spares and Care | DJI channel, Care Enterprise | OEM or integrator |
When the custom frame is the aircraft
Leave M400 when the instrument physically will not hang inside 6 kg, when the work is research or defence integration that needs an open airframe, or when a small expert team is the whole operation and scale is not the brief. In those shops DJI's closed ports are the constraint, and paying for a specialist is honest.
Stay on M400 when the sensor is already in the Zenmuse set, when more than one crew has to fly it, when the file has to land in a Terra-shaped office, and when you need the aircraft serviceable without a named integrator on the phone. That is most survey, utility and mining capture we see.
Talk through the job if the quote in front of you is a custom frame beside an M400. Send the sensor mass, the mount drawing and who will fly it when the integrator is away. Matrice 400
