The question we get from crews already on Matrice 350 RTK is blunt. What do we actually gain by going to Matrice 400?
The answer is not a new paint code. M400 is a different class: more mass on the gimbal, a longer published endurance with a sensor fitted, real-time terrain follow, and the only DJI airframe that takes Zenmuse L3. If the M350 still carries the payload you invoice and still finishes the block, keep flying it.
Payload and AGL, not a badge
DJI's upgrade note puts M350 at 2.7 kg and three mounted payloads. M400 is 6 kg at the third gimbal (sea level; it falls with altitude) and up to seven mounts across E-Port V2. That is the fork.
P1 and H30 Series still hang on M350. L2 still hangs on M350. L3 does not. If the next contract is L3 range, returns and dual 100 MP colour, the upgrade is forced by the connector, not by marketing.
Where M350 starts to hurt on sensors it can still mount: slow mapping with a heavy LiDAR, a zoom-plus-thermal hang in wind, or a day that is already a chain of battery swaps. Crews compensate by shortening the mission or dropping a camera. M400 is how you stop compensating. It also brings more operations-manual and insurance weight. That trade is real.
Specs that change the buy
| Spec | Matrice 350 RTK (DJI published) | Matrice 400 (DJI published) |
|---|---|---|
| Max payload | 2.7 kg | 6 kg at third gimbal, sea level |
| Endurance with a mapping payload | Shorter. DJI quotes M400 with L2 as about 40% longer than M350 or M300 with L2 | 59 min with a single H30T, L2 or P1 (forward 10 m/s, sea level, no wind on the H30T sheet) |
| Aerial LiDAR | L2 | L2, and L3 on the dedicated connector |
| Terrain follow | Import a DSM/DEM, or download ASTER GDEM | Real-time visual terrain follow on mapping and manual flight |
| Obstacle sensing | Vision | Rotating LiDAR, six-direction millimetre-wave, fisheye |
| Transmission | O3 Enterprise | O4 Enterprise Enhanced |
| Dock 3 | No | No. Crewed. 4D is the dock aircraft |

What DJI measured with L2 on both
Run Li's 15 August 2025 Enterprise Insights piece flew M350 plus L2 against M400 plus L2 on the same day, same 160-acre site at Big Rock, Malibu, after the 2025 Southern California fires. Flight altitude 325 ft AGL. Speed 20 mph. Overlap 60% side and 70% forward. Efficiency mode off. IMU calibration on. Twenty-three control targets. D-RTK 3 as the base.
The planner-on-paper story is larger: DJI's spec math gives M400 with L2 a 59-minute flight, about 40% longer than M350 or M300 with L2, and "over 80 percent more coverage per flight" once they subtract a 10-minute non-effective pad. That 80% is a mission-planner estimate under those assumptions, not the field day.
On the ground, high wind and steep terrain ate the estimates. Effective time (first waypoint to last) was 45 minutes on M350 across two flights (24 then 21) and 38 minutes on M400 across two flights (35 then 3). DJI reports 16% better overall flight efficiency and about 39% more coverage in a single flight. Real-time terrain follow is the mechanism they name: M350 needed a DSM imported into Pilot 2; M400 held AGL from the visual sensors. We have not repeated that block in Australia.
ASTER's 30 m grid is a weak surface model for a pit or a dump that moved last month. If you stay on M350 and you need terrain follow, plan on a current DSM, not the internet download.
Keep the M350 when it still closes
Stay on M350 when the payload is already inside 2.7 kg, L2 or P1 or H30T is the sensor you sell, and you are not waiting on L3. Stay when the extra governance of a heavier aircraft would stall the program. Bad overlap, a float trajectory or a coordinate system nobody named stay processing problems on either aircraft.
Upgrade when at least two of these are true this quarter: mass or power draw is already cutting the M350 flight, you need L3, you need multi-sensor on one flight, or AGL on uneven ground is the density problem and you are done importing DSMs for every block.
Talk through the job if you are on M350 and staring at L3 or a hang that already clips the battery. Bring the payload list and a typical block. Matrice 400 · Zenmuse L3
