The quote lands with a LiDAR that will not bolt onto the aircraft you already fly. Or the inspection hang is zoom, thermal, a spotlight and a speaker on the same flight, and the mass has already eaten the battery. That is the moment Matrice 400 is the aircraft, not a bigger sticker on an M350.
M400 is DJI's crewed heavy-lift. It exists so the sensor can fly without you shortening the block, dropping a camera or pretending Dock 3 will carry LiDAR. If the sensor already hangs on Matrice 350 RTK or a Matrice 4-class body, and the day already finishes, the upgrade is spare mass you will not use.
The payload a smaller airframe will not hang
DJI's published ceiling is 6 kg at the third gimbal connector, measured at sea level. Capacity falls as you go up. Dual lower mounts sit around 950 g each. The dedicated Zenmuse L3 connector is a different port again: L3 plus connector is about 1.75 kg, and that connector is M400 only.
That last line is the usual reason we spec M400. P1 photogrammetry and H30 Series inspection still fly on Matrice 350 RTK. L3 does not. If the tender is colourised aerial LiDAR at L3 range and returns, you are buying an airframe change, not a new gimbal for the old one.
Multi-sensor is the other hang. H30T beside an S1 spotlight and a V1 speaker is a public-safety load. S1 draws up to 120 W on M400 against 68 W on M350-class. The extra power is why night illumination looks different on this airframe. Total mass and centre of gravity still have to close; we check that before the first paid flight.
Endurance and sensing with a sensor on board
DJI's 59-minute figure is forward flight at 10 m/s, sea level, no wind, H30T only, aircraft plus payload 10,670 g, battery flown to forced landing. Hover under those same conditions is 53 minutes. Heavier combinations, wind and altitude cut that. The number that matters is endurance with the billable sensor attached.
Obstacle sensing is rotating LiDAR, six-direction millimetre-wave radar and fisheye vision. DJI's millimetre-wave sheet gives 36 m on a 12 mm wire and 50 m on 21.6 mm. Rotating LiDAR quotes 35 m on 21.6 mm steel-core aluminium at 10,000 lux with a 30 degree body tilt. Those are lab wires, not a guarantee that every conductor on a Victorian easement will paint. Power-line AR is the overlay in the goggles, not a substitute for a method.
O4 Enterprise Enhanced is the radio. DJI's CE/SRRC/MIC figure is 20 km unobstructed. IP55 is the weather rating, and it wears. ADS-B In is a receiver. It feeds a safety case. It is not detect-and-avoid on its own, and CASA still owns the authorisation.
Jobs that use that envelope
Utilities that need conductors in the picture and a zoom-plus-thermal payload. Corridor and pit LiDAR that is actually L3. Mining and industrial sites where the aircraft has to sit in wind and dust with mass on the gimbal. Public safety that hangs light and voice with the camera. A research instrument that still fits inside 6 kg and still speaks DJI's ports.
Repeat Monday orthos from a prepared pad belong on Matrice 4D with Dock 3. Compact visual or thermal without a heavy gimbal belongs on Matrice 4E or 4T. M400 is the specialist in that mix.
When a smaller aircraft still finishes the work
Keep Matrice 350 RTK when P1 or H30T still covers the work you invoice, flight time with that payload is enough, and you are not waiting on L3. Keep Matrice 4-class when the camera is already in the airframe and you want more flights per week, not more kilograms.
Overlap, a sloppy coordinate system and a payload the pilot has not flown stay planning and processing on any airframe. See Terra vs Modify for the file.
Crew, insurance and the operations manual all get larger with M400. Programs that buy the flagship "for later" tend to park it. Grow the sensor requirement, then the airframe.
Talk through the job if you are staring at L3, a dual hang or an M350 that already does the week. We would rather keep you on the smaller aircraft than sell mass you never fly. Matrice 400 · Zenmuse L3
