FAQ

Questions, answered

Choosing & buying

Is the Matrice 4T the right aircraft for our inspection programme?
Yes, when the billable output is radiometric thermal, standoff visual inspection or night public-safety work — not survey-grade orthos. The M4T adds a 640 × 512 uncooled thermal sensor with R-JPEG export, NIR auxiliary light and the same medium tele and tele visual chain plus laser rangefinder to 1800 m. If your weekly deliverable is progress orthos or DSMs, the M4E is the mapping aircraft — different job, different conversation.
We're on a Matrice 30T — what does upgrading to the M4T actually change?
You keep radiometric thermal and R-JPEG, but gain a more compact foldable airframe, around 49 minutes endurance, O4 Enterprise transmission, integrated RTK and smart detection features in Pilot 2. The M4T pairs 640 × 512 thermal with super-resolution to 1280 × 1024, hybrid zoom on the tele chain and NIR auxiliary light for low-light zoom work. If your M30T still meets the standoff and thermal spec you quote, there's no forced upgrade.
Can we use the M4T for mapping and 3D modelling instead of an M4E?
Not for survey-grade photogrammetry. The M4T wide camera lacks the M4E's mechanical shutter and 4/3 mapping sensor — thermal and inspection workflows are what it's built for. Clients expecting ortho RMSE or mechanical-shutter mapping speed should be on M4E. Use M4T when thermal, night ops or standoff zoom is the deliverable, and route mapping jobs to the right aircraft.
What's included when Mirrormapper supplies an M4T versus buying elsewhere?
Genuine AU stock with AUSCORS NTRIP configured on your account, inspection mission templates loaded for your common asset types, and hands-on handover from our Melbourne team covering Pilot 2 thermal capture and reporting workflows. You get a 12-month warranty backed by Australian Consumer Law and the same engineers on support. We configure the aircraft for your inspection programme before it leaves Melbourne.
Do I need my thermal reporting workflow nailed down before I book a demo?
No. Tell us what you're inspecting — switchgear, solar arrays, facades, SAR grid searches — and we'll fly a representative mission and walk through the reporting path. Most buyers know the asset class, not the finished emissivity and export spec. Book a demo and we'll process sample R-JPEG data so you can judge the workflow before you commit.
Why buy the M4T from Mirrormapper instead of ordering direct overseas?
Overseas direct means no Australian Consumer Law warranty path, no Melbourne handover, no AUSCORS NTRIP setup and no local repair when a job is booked tomorrow. Our price is genuine AU stock with engineers who configure the aircraft, load your mission templates and answer the phone on site. Relative savings rarely survive freight, import GST and the downtime when something needs sorting locally.

Performance & workflow

Is the M4T thermal camera radiometric, and what format do we get?
Yes — the 640 × 512 sensor captures full radiometric data per pixel. Pilot 2 exports R-JPEG (16-bit radiometric) and 8-bit JPEG preview images. R-JPEG holds temperature values embedded in DJI's proprietary format — you need DJI DIRP-compatible software or a proper conversion step for third-party analysis. We wire the reporting path during handover, including Thermalmapper when you run recurring inspection programmes.
Do we need Thermalmapper, or can we stay on DJI Thermal Analysis Tool?
DJI Thermal Analysis Tool 3 handles spot and area measurements, emissivity correction and basic reporting from R-JPEG files. Thermalmapper fits recurring inspection programmes where you want faster report generation, trend tracking and less manual cleanup across large asset portfolios. Custom AI Models layer automated detection on Matrice data when you need alerts, not just images. We recommend what fits your invoiced deliverables.
Can we build thermal orthomosaics from M4T data in Metashape or Pix4D?
Not directly from R-JPEG — third-party photogrammetry tools cannot read DJI's embedded radiometric layer natively. The workflow is convert R-JPEG to single-channel float32 TIFF with temperature values preserved, then process in Metashape or similar. Thermal-only structure-from-motion also struggles on low-feature surfaces — we map the realistic path for your asset type during handover rather than promising a one-click ortho.
How do emissivity and measurement distance affect M4T readings?
Emissivity, reflected apparent temperature, capture distance, humidity and atmospheric temperature all feed the radiometric calculation — default emissivity of 1.0 is rarely correct for real materials. Set material-appropriate emissivity in Pilot 2 at capture or correct in analysis software before signing off a report. Standoff zoom and the laser rangefinder help you hold consistent distance on repeat inspections.
Can the M4T operate at night for search or security work?
Yes — that's a core use case. The NIR auxiliary light supports low-light zoom work alongside thermal, and night scene ISO ranges extend well beyond daylight modes on the visual cameras. Smart detection features in Pilot 2 support search, security and infrastructure surveys. Flight still requires compliant VLOS operations, site risk assessment and appropriate lighting of hazards on the ground.
What E-Port accessories actually fit the 200 g payload limit?
Official accessories — AL1 spotlight, AS1 speaker, gas sensors, parachute recovery and similar — plus approved third-party PSDK payloads within the weight envelope. Accessories must be installed before power-on; there is no hot-swap on the primary port. We confirm compatibility and mounting before quoting an inspection bundle.

Compliance

Do we need special CASA approvals to operate an M4T commercially?
Standard visual line of sight operations fall under your existing ReOC and RePL framework with a site-specific risk assessment — we provide CASA-aware deployment guidance, not CASA approval. Night operations and public-safety deployments may need additional operational considerations in your risk assessment. CASA grants authorisations; we help you scope the case.

Support

What warranty and support do I get on an M4T?
A 12-month warranty backed by Australian Consumer Law, with support from our Melbourne team — phone, email, and the same engineers who configured your aircraft and did your handover. Training is bundled in Melbourne; other major Australian cities are available for an additional fee. DJI Care Enterprise extends accidental cover when you want it.
