The box is rarely the failure. Autonomy makes a weak pad, a shared network and an unnamed owner obvious. Hardware gets the post-mortem. Structure was the cause.
This is a Dock 3 qualification note. It is not a handheld scanning post. Rooms the aircraft cannot see are a different kit. See choose the capture stack if the brief also has interiors.
The site was never ready
Marginal geometry. Obstacles that only appear on one heading. Poor GNSS. Wind you guessed. Dust, flood, debris.
A crewed pilot can wait. A docked Matrice 4D or 4TD will abort. Qualify the pad before you buy the box.
Autonomy is not a labour replacement
You remove on-site piloting. You do not remove oversight, decisions, incident response or who owns the alert at 2 am.
Programs that stall have no operator on duty, no abort plan and no name on the FlightHub queue.
Connectivity was assumed
"Usually fine" mobile coverage. Shared corporate Wi-Fi. Untested firewalls. When the link drops, the mission dies and confidence dies with it. Treat the link as infrastructure.
RTK was bolted on late
Portable poles on an autonomous pad. Bad antenna placement. Multipath. No spare.
On a dock, RTK is part of the site, not a rover you remember on Tuesday. We put AUSCORS NTRIP on most Australian kits. D-RTK 3 stays in the conversation where the pad needs a local station.
The use case was "general monitoring"
Autonomy likes a repeatable mission tied to a measurable output. If you cannot name the cadence and the file, utilisation falls and the dock becomes a demo.
Nobody owns the program
Who authorises the flight. Who watches it. Who owns compliance. Who answers a failure. Who owns the data. Gaps hide in demos and show up in audits.
Marketing autonomy versus the pad you have
Real dock work is conditional, conservative and supervised. Weather, airspace and health checks still exist. If the organisation cannot run a crewed program, a dock will not fix that.

FAQ
Does Dock 3 remove the need for a person?
No. It removes the person on the pad. Someone still owns the mission, the abort and the data.
Should I add a handheld scanner to a dock quote?
Only if the deliverable includes rooms or under canopy the aircraft cannot fly. That is a separate walk, not a dock accessory.
Is Dock 2 still a path?
For a controlled, fair-weather, single-site trial, sometimes. New enterprise pads we quote are Dock 3 with 4D or 4TD.
